When buying meat, if the date says best before ...... how long can you keep it in the frig before cooking?

I bought it on Thursday and best before date was the next day (friday) and I am cooking it now on a sunday. There was no real smell to it, and it was a simmering steak, so I browned it and have simmered it in a broth for an hour and a half which is what you are told to do. I just started thinking about the date and I don't want to be paranoid but does meat go bad right after the due date?
