Can pugs go on an airplanes?

I've heard rumors that it is a bad idea to take pugs (or other "squished nosed" dogs) on airplanes due to problems with pressure and breathing. I also heard that there is surgery that they have to do to remove some kind of cartilage or something in their nasal area so they can fly. I was just wondering if the rumors are true or I am a complete gullible idiot? I have a pug and I have family that lives a considerable amount away. I couldn't travel without bringing my dog along with me!
