Do I need the BlackBerry plan to put mp3 songs on the media card?

So I just bought a BlackBerry Pearl (red) from at&t, formerly Cingular Wireless. I however, do not have a BlackBerry plan. Do I need that plan to just put mp3 songs on the micro SD card that I put in the phone? I transfer them on the Desktop Manager but they don't show up on the phone..
