Initially it caused Christian to go underground. They had to hide their beliefs, and often worshiped in catacombs. Those who did not hide it were often executing. This spurred on the movement by creating martyrs and saints whom people looked up to and revered. This lasted until the time of Constantine, who made Christianity the official religion.
